I'm just wondering what you guys think makes a hot comp? Do you like the story format (more linear) or do you prefer the hypno type where random words and phrases are flashed on the screen? Do you prefer only video clips, only pictures, or a combination of both?
Personally, the choice of music is a big one for me. Preferably sexually explicit hip hop or something urban. I think it's also important to synchronize the clips to the music. Scene changes should be made to the beat, if that makes any sense.
Also, having captions is important. I like the hypno type the best, where words and phrases flash on the screen quickly. Almost like subliminal messages, as opposed to the story format.
Quick editing is also a plus. Two or three seconds a clip. The exception is when you have a clip of a girl talking. "Once you go black, you never go back..." or something like that.
Transitions really help with the flow in my opinion. I've also noticed when editing that it's a good idea to adjust the color and contrast so that the clips all have the same "feel" to them. For instance, the Blacksonblondes/ Dogfart clips all seem really washed out to me, color wise. So when you have one of those clips next to a clip with more color and contrast, the result is sort of an unnatural feeling. I think the comps seem to work best if all the clips look like they all came from the same studio. The only exception is if you are using an effect, such as black and white.
Last but not least, the quality of the video clips is important, too. If you have HD clips spliced in with grainy, low quality clips from tube sites that also seems to affect the flow.
