You've a lot of company in that view, especially on the Continent. And a lot of people in the more classical tradition do fail to pay sufficient attention to the fact that all philosophizing about the subject-object relationship takes place within the subject-object relationship. Existentialists/phenomenologists get that, but I'm afraid they go completely over the top with it. Give me Aristotle, Hume, Kant, and Anglo-American analytical philosophy.

I've read a little Nietzsche, but not in Kaufmann translations. I do have a collection of existentialist writings that he edited, some of which he also translated.

At the risk of offending some of you, I don't feel like western philosophy became interesting until Dostoyevsky came into the picture.

All of the metaphysics, epistemology, and aesthetic principles on the planet can't hold a candle to a solid existential read. That is, of course, my opinion. ;D

On that note, has anyone ever read any of the Kaufmann translations of Nietzsche?

This might have something to do with the idea that the brain is the largest sexual organ. And also that educated people tend to be more broad-minded.

I'm reminded of one of the famous sex researchers (Kinsley or Masters & Johnson, or somebody) found that the higher your education level the more sexually open (or kinky) you are. :-* I guess we shouldn't be suprised.

I think it is pretty clear I am not educated enough to even begin to fit in, or comment, on this thread!! lol The only reading I have time for is assigned reading or a very good interracial love story! The last thing I remember actually reading because I wanted to was the 'Dragonard' series by Rupert Gilchrist. Once I started I couldn't stop. I hope one day I will be able to list a degree or two! :-\

You, I, and everybody here is more than just some set of degrees, or titles or books we've read or not read. Very true. One of my best friends happens to be a guy who has no formal education beyond high school. He is extremely intelligent and well-read, and can converse with me about all matter of subjects. The thing is, he just never had the discipline to sit still long enough to commit himself to completing an advanced course of study. Too bad too because no matter how smart or intelligent you are, for the majority of employers, if you don't have those pieces of paper then you don't have a chance in hell of landing a good position with them. In our society, "self-taught" normally simply isn't good enough.

Society needs external markers and degrees and certificates are among them. The discipline you mention, TND, is also very important. It's difficult to acquire and it's one of the things that schools can help inculcate. What they also provide is learning how to learn. There's nothing like a teacher and a room full of classmates to force one to really think things through, from multiple points of view, before opening one's mouth. Once you've learned it, self-education is not much different to formal education. Without it, self-education is difficult, and sometimes even more dangerous than no education.
